Journey with the Ferry Man Whitney Vale 9781944899462 Books

"Deeply evocative, startlingly felt, the poems in Journey with the Ferry Man wink like sequins turning in light; they endear with their hard-won wisdom, their feminist bedrock. One reads in the poems a citizenship in language, in the inventive and organizing force with which these poems handle their materials, their contemporary and mythological sources. In the title poem, Vale promises two poems as payment to the ferry man to cross the threshold river. We can be grateful for the fifteen poems in this exciting collection. Each has the ability to map us to the other side; each poem is a lyric instruction for how to row." TYLER MEIER, Executive Director, University of Arizona Poetry Center A unique perspective defines Whitney Vale's Journey with the Ferry Man and Other Poems. From the beginning where an ordinary clothes rack becomes "a fabric forest," these poems let us see the world differently. With wit, fresh images, and memorable phrasing, Vale gives us an oracular/ocular vision where "the wild comes forward." REBECCA SEIFERLE, author of Wild Tongue and Tucson Poet Laureate

This book is a beautiful small collection of poetry which carries you carefully through a life-time's vivid impressions of life in a female body. Some of it is political, as an inevitable part of a life in society, but the heart of it is a celebration of physical perception in a complicated world. Ms. Vale's poetry tolerates & interrogate perceptions that don't always correspond easily or directly with the external reality which prompts them. This can be startling to a reader who has always considered accurate perception to be mandatory, but when you give in to the book -- which you really have to do to appreciate these poems -- you perceive how much of the poet's work involves successfully clarifying the interplay of reality, perception and art.In the journey of the book -- and I recommend reading the poems in the order presented, allowing the author to take you on a journey outside yourself just as a ferryman would -- a willing reader observes the complications of a woman's life from the inside while also learning what sense she makes of those experiences. From the child beginning to explore the world, through the unique burdens of family troubles, loss and particularly female vulnerabilities, the poet reaches the middle of her voyage, convinced that her work – her pushback against the world – is poetry. The title poem is the last in the book, and I don’t think it represents coming aground on the far shore: The journey continues and the effort required, for all that it is internal, is substantial. The really good news is that the poetry is good – it documents the voyage in a way that can be shared, and the reader benefits from its surprisingly healing presence.
